Teaching practice is essential for equipping undergraduate education students to emerge as proficient and impactful facilitators within students’ learning journeys. Teaching Practice (Praktik Keterampilan Mengajar, shortened as PKM) is an annual event held by LP3M. In 2023, LP3M organized an International PKM for its undergraduate students to enhance their skills at SILN (Sekolah Indonesia Luar Negeri), a school dedicated to Indonesian children living abroad.<\/p>\n
This year, LP3M opened an International PKM at SIS (Sekolah Indonesia Singapura), SIJ (Sekolah Indonesia Jeddah), and SIR (Sekolah Indonesia Riyadh). Three UNJ students, namely Amanda Weliyanti (Biology Education), Zalfa Nurafirst Ardita Sari (Mathematics Education), and Madani Borneo Kania (Chemistry Education), were selected to implement their teaching skills at SIS. They were thrilled to begin their journey.<\/p>\n
Arriving in Singapore, they were welcomed by the SIS principal and some of the teachers. They went to their respective condos in Bedok and took some rest. The following day, they visited SIS for the first time and introduced themselves to all SIS students. They received their schedules for the rest of the month and were very excited to start teaching SIS students.<\/p>\n
What’s unique about SIS students is their high level of confidence. They aren’t afraid of speaking in front of all the students in the hall, and they frequently ask questions in class. Teaching there was so much fun.<\/p>\n
In addition to teaching, they also participated in numerous non-academic activities. They took part in school extracurricular activities such as scouting at East Coast Park and Pasir Ris, served as masters of ceremony at the SIS Birthday Event, which was attended by Singapore’s Minister of Education, and participated in the SIS Graduation Event.<\/p>\n
They also frequently visited the Indonesian Embassy for various enjoyable activities. They attended workshops on combating sexual harassment, watched documentary movies, and discussed them with other undergraduate students from NTU, NUS, and even UT. Our Education Attach\u00e9, Mr. Satrya Wibawa, was very kind and invited them to the Asean Civilization Museum to watch Balinese traditional dances and other attractions. They also had the opportunity to watch Indonesian students from NUS performing ‘Gaya’ (shortened from Gelar Budaya) and were introduced to their favorite halal and affordable restaurants near NTU.<\/p>\n
Overall, it was an enjoyable experience. They broadened their perspectives abroad, learned a great deal from Singapore’s government and educational system, and gained ideas about what initiatives they should undertake to improve the educational system in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
