{"id":4958,"date":"2022-02-22T10:06:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T10:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fmipa.unj.ac.id\/physicsedu-b\/?p=4958"},"modified":"2023-10-09T10:34:43","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T10:34:43","slug":"tree-cloned-from-newtons-apple-tree-falls-in-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fmipa.unj.ac.id\/physicsedu-b\/?p=4958","title":{"rendered":"Tree cloned from &#8216;Newton&#8217;s Apple Tree&#8217; falls in storm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Cloned Trees<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">&#8216;Newton&#8217;s Apple Tree&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Collapsed by Storm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>February 22, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cambridge University Botanical Gardens, England, has lost its \u201cNewton apple tree\u201d due to Hurricane Eunice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Botanical gardens curator, Dr Samuel Brockington, said the tree was planted in 1954 and had stood at the entrance to Brookside botanical gardens for 68 years.\u00a0He said the tree was cloned from the tree that led Sir Isaac Newton to discover the law of gravity.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CUBotanicGarden\/status\/1494968340011524099\">The botanical garden said it still has a copy of the tree<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0which will soon be planted elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"536\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/fmipa.unj.ac.id\/physicsedu-b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-348.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4961\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A clone of the &#8216;Newton apple tree&#8217; in the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens was planted in 1954<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The original apple tree, which led Newton to devise his theory of gravity, is at&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/woolsthorpe-manor\/features\/the-story-of-our-apple-tree-at-woolsthorpe-manor\">Woolsthorpe Manor in Grantham, Lincolnshire<\/a>&nbsp;.&nbsp;Although it was blown down by strong winds in the 19th century, the tree was preserved and&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/media\/physics\/home\/appletree\/The%20history%20of%20Newtons%20apple%20tree%20by%20Richard%20G%20Keesing.pdf\">over the years has been propagated by grafting<\/a>&nbsp;, in the form of tying one of its shoots to another young tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr Brockington, analysis shows three trees in Cambridge \u2013 including one in the botanical gardens \u2013 are clones of Newton&#8217;s original apple trees.\u00a0He said although it was a &#8220;sad loss&#8221; when it collapsed in Friday&#8217;s storm, they realized the tree &#8220;didn&#8217;t have long to live&#8221; because it was already being eaten away by fungus.\u00a0However, it has cloned the tree, &#8220;through the extraordinary science of grafting, so the &#8216;Newton Apple Tree&#8217; will hopefully remain in our collection&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"570\" height=\"397\" src=\"https:\/\/fmipa.unj.ac.id\/physicsedu-b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-349.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4964\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The botanical garden was aware that before it fell, the tree\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;didn&#8217;t have much\u00a0\u00a0longer to live&#8221; because it was already being eaten away by fungus.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"716\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/fmipa.unj.ac.id\/physicsedu-b\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-350.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4965\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Another replica of Newton&#8217;s apple tree will be placed at another location in the botanical garden.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cloned Trees &#8216;Newton&#8217;s Apple Tree&#8217; Collapsed by Storm February 22, 2022 Cambridge University Botanical Gardens, England, has lost its \u201cNewton apple tree\u201d due to Hurricane Eunice.
