UNJ Biology Students Are Enthusiastic about Participating in International Training Programs in Malaysia

State University of Jakarta (UNJ) Biology Study Program students are enthusiastic about participating in the “Natural Antimicrobial Products” training at the Institute of Bioproduct Development (IBD) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Through a collaborative program between UNJ, IBD-UTM and Sateera Biotech Sdn. Bhd., and Nutrition Technologies Sdn.Bhd., Malaysia, held a workshop for Biology study program students at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Jakarta State University (UNJ) for 3 days. This activity was attended by 22 participants consisting of students and lecturers of the Bachelor of Biology and Bachelor and Master of Biology Education study programs. The activity takes place from 29 December 2022 to 1 December 2022.

This event was directly attended by Dr. Diana Vivanti Sigit, M.Si as Deputy Dean III of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UNJ. Also present was the Director of the Bioproduct Development Institute, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Prof. Dr. Hesyam A. EL Enshashi, Executive Director of Sateera Biotech Sdn. Bhd., Dr. Low Hock Heng, and Yang directly delivered material to the workshop participants.

In this workshop, the participants received material regarding natural ingredients that have the potential to become antimicrobial products. This material is very interesting because it is being used as a hot topic of discussion in the processed food and drug product industry. There have been many industrial fields that apply the concept of biotechnology to their products. So that this topic is considered very appropriate to be used as a provision for biology students in conducting research in the future.

In addition, participants also had the opportunity to directly visit the IBD Laboratory, UTM, Malaysia. On this occasion, participants were introduced to products produced by IBD, ranging from cosmetic products, essential oils, medicines, processed foods and so on. Participants were also introduced to the laboratory equipment used to process these products.

UTM also invited Nutrition Technologies (NT) as a resource person in this workshop, the topic given by NT on this occasion was very interesting. NT introduced their core product which is black fly larvae in the nutrient recycling process. The resulting products can then be applied to agriculture to maintain environmental sustainability.

The training activity was immediately closed by the Director of the Bioproduct Development Institute, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Prof. Dr. Hesyam A. EL Enshashi accompanied by handing over plaques as souvenirs and handing over certificates to workshop participants. Hope in the future UNJ, IBD-UTM, Sateera Biotech Sdn. Bhd., and Nutrition Technologies Sdn. Bhd can continue to cooperate in various fields such as Research and Development programs, training, excecutive programs, CSR, and internship program.
