Community Service August 5 2017

Community service for higher education is an obligation that is parallel to the dharma of education/teaching and the dharma of research. In other terms, it is said to be the tri dharma of higher education which includes the dharma of education and teaching, the darma of research, and the darma of community service.

A good university must synchronize these three principles. This rationale is based on the great desire that a university not only produces people who are knowledgeable and think conceptually but must also have social sensitivity or environmental concern in the midst of their lives. Therefore, the concept of the ivory tower for universities must be eliminated. This is based on the concept that humans, apart from having intellectual/academic abilities, are also social creatures and therefore they must definitely pay attention to their living environment. Humans must be friendly to the environment and care about others. Community service is an effort carried out by someone, both individually and together or in groups or institutions to help improve the standard of living of the people being assisted in accordance with the mission they carry out. When this dharma is related to higher education, it is adapted to the mission it carries, namely the practice of science, technology and art directly in society, carried out institutionally and professionally, as a noble responsibility of higher education in an effort to develop community capacity so that it can accelerate the achievement of national development goals. To determine the effectiveness and accuracy of the knowledge developed at a university, it needs to be applied to the user community. Likewise, to determine the effectiveness of research results obtained in research studies at universities, they also need to be applied to the user community. The principle of community service by a university is part of the application of learning materials and research results to the community. Community service by universities must therefore include several aspects:

  1. Development of science, technology and arts;
  2. Dissemination of science, technology and art;
  3. Application of science, technology and art;
  4. Providing expertise assistance to the community;
  5. Providing professional services to the community.

The forms of activities that are often carried out in community service at a university are:

  1. Education to the community. What is meant by education to the community is the provision of non-formal education in the context of continuing education with various forms of activities; courses, upgrading, workshops, job training, counseling, job guidance. 4 It should be noted that educational activities for the community are practical programs, must be adapted to market needs, take into account the socio-cultural conditions of the community and the level of community education. If this is not taken into consideration, it is very likely that what is done will be useless and wasteful.
  2. Service to the community. While in modern society there are simultaneously professional public servants who can help people who need it at any time, however in developing societies this is still very limited if not yet non-existent. In connection with this, it is necessary for universities to provide professional services to people who need higher education.
  3. Development of research results. Research results need to be developed so that people can enjoy them. The product can be applied knowledge, technology or art whose results are ready to use. The form of activity can be; working methods, work procedures, teaching methods, subject matter and so on.
  4. Integrated regional development. By collaborating with several regional agencies, universities that already have expert staff who already have regional development planning concepts can provide service in the form of assisted villages to carry out regional development planning in an integrated and comprehensive manner. This is of course very closely related to regional planning in an area where there are regulations as guidelines.
  5. Technology Transfer. This technology transfer results in new products in the form of ready-to-use technology. In order to be useful to society, it needs to be introduced to society, offered to society so that it can be adapted. The targets of this technology transfer are: the industrial world, the business world, groups in society, individuals, community organizations, and government agencies.
