Student Internship Experience in the Chemistry Study Program at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), Taiwan

Internship activities have been carried out through the Taiwan Experience Education Programs (TEEP) held by the Agro-Environment Testing and Inspection Center (AETIC) at the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), Taiwan on 15th July-15th October 2023. This internship program is a collaboration between NKUST and the Undergraduate Chemistry Study Program FMIPA UNJ, funded by the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MoE).

The Chemistry Study Program sent 3 student representatives, consisting of:

  1. Anisa Fitriyanti (Chemistry 2020)
  2. Selvia Ningsih (Chemistry 2020)
  3. Wulan Kharisma Dera (Chemistry 2020)

In carrying out internship activities, the three students were supervised directly by Prof. Shyi-Tien Chen as Professor from the Department of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE), and Head of the Agro-Environment Testing and Inspection Center (AETIC), NKUST. Apart from that, Anisa, Selvia, and Wulan were also supervised by several master’s students from the Safety Health Environmental (SHE) Department while conducting research at the Biomolecule-Based Technology Laboratory (BBTL). Activities begin in July-August, where students are given directions and laboratory training. Furthermore, in September-October were given a research project on the use of algae from the Black Winged Stilt Lake at NKUST. On this occasion a series of experiments were carried out starting from isolation, cultivation, extraction, and analysis of lipids, nitrogen, phosphorus, and TOC.

The experience of taking part in an internship program at the Taiwan Experience Education Programs (TEEP) is a very memorable and unforgettable experience, thus providing students with knowledge and skills in the laboratory. Participants in this internship activity also gain wider international relations from several countries, such as students from Taiwan, India, China, Japan, and others. Apart from that, Anisa, Selvia, and Wulan had the opportunity to meet and gain a lot of experience and advice from Indonesian students who are currently studying Masters and Doctoral degrees at NKUST. In this program, the three students also learn language, culture, and enjoy the local Taiwanese food.

This internship activity was the starting point for good collaboration between Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) and National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST). It is hoped this collaboration will continue well and can be established in various sectors of the tri dharma of higher education.
