Workshop on the Development of Biotechnology Research and Environmental Engineering

Chemistry Study Program at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ) successfully held a workshop on the development of biotechnology research and environmental engineering with the theme “Emerging Research Trends in Biotechnology and Safety, Health, and Environmental Engineering” on September 24, 2024, from 08:00 to 12:00 WIB. The event, which took place offline in Dewi Sartika Building, Room 912, featured experienced speakers from the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) in Taiwan, namely Prof. Shyi-Tien Chen, a lecturer from the Department of Safety, Health, & Environmental Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Irma Ratna Kartika, M.Sc.Tech, a lecturer from the Chemistry Study Program at UNJ. The workshop was attended by 40 participants from the Chemistry Program, Classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The workshop aims to enrich students' understanding of the developments in biotechnology and molecular biology research. The event began with an opening, a prayer reading, a presentation by Prof. Shyi-Tien Chen, followed by a presentation by Prof. Dr. Irma Ratna Kartika, M.Sc.Tech, a symbolic certificate presentation to the speakers, closing remarks, and a documentation session.

In the interactive presentation session by Prof. Shyi-Tien Chen, participants were invited to understand molecular biology and its applications. Additionally, an introduction to the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) in Taiwan was provided, along with information about two scholarship programs at NKUST, namely IIPP and TEEP. The presentation then moved on to the core discussion, focusing on the latest developments in molecular biology. At this stage, participants learned about genetic engineering using the CRISPR-Cas9 technique. During this session, Prof. Shyi-Tien Chen engaged with the participants by conducting a Q&A at every opportunity, and the participants actively responded to the questions posed.

Next was the presentation session delivered by Prof. Dr. Irma Ratna Kartika, M.Sc.Tech. In this session, participants were invited to understand the latest research by Irma Ratna Kartika on the synthesis of α-tocopherol derivative compounds as antioxidant and anticancer agents. Participants learned about the synthesized derivative compounds, the synthesis methods, and the characterization tests conducted. After this presentation session, there was a Q&A segment between the participants and the speakers, where the moderator also posed questions to the workshop attendees.

With the successful conduct of this biotechnology workshop, it is hoped that students will be equipped with the latest knowledge related to biotechnology and environmental engineering that is relevant in the field of material chemistry, as well as prepare them to face challenges in both the job market and research. Furthermore, the collaboration between the Chemistry Study Program at UNJ and the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) is expected to continue and contribute significantly to the development of science and technology in the fields of biotechnology and molecular biology.
